"The Willis Bros. are a tremendous resource"
-Monterey Herald

"Your columns are so beautiful. You should put all of these "essays" together into a book. The way you tie in surfing to philosophy, living a good life, serenity, and the inner life is sheer poetry full of richness."
-Karen

Big Wave Mind Set

Consider big wave surfing as possibly the greatest athletic feat mankind has ever known. Surfing giant waves is not for everyone but achieving our personal goals is. Of all the billions of people who inhabit the earth today, perhaps fewer than twenty have ever experienced ridding waves over 30 feet. Big wave surfers are in a league all their own with nothing to compare to or that even comes close.

Many people believe big wave surfers must have nerves of steel and be incredibly brave. To a great degree this is true. Look deeper and you will discover the real secret that goes beyond bravado and in trepidation. The secret is facing challenges, mind control and never giving up. The same mindset that it takes to ride the largest of waves is the same mindset that it takes to achieve even the smallest of goals. Yes a big wave surfer is prepared for the worst but his or her mindset faces challenges head on. Thoughts are telescopically steadfast on desired results with the intention of never giving up. The human mind can only think one thought at a time. Facing a mammoth challenge one cannot afford even a micro thought of doubt. If one thought of doubt or fear enters the mind then it is all over. Instead of embracing the challenge you will find yourself running away from it.

Definitely one of the best lessons learned is that by keeping the mind focused and positive any and everything is possible. If a human being can actually ride ocean swells that have more power than an cascading avalanche then by practicing the same mind set what can't we do?

Whatever your desire: to be a scholar, a millionaire, a great athlete, a fantastic parent or anything else, approach it by embracing the challenge with non wavering focus on the results that you want and never give up. Why use valuable life energy entertaining thoughts of worry or doubt? Thoughts of this kind will never help you and in fact can bring about havoc. We are keepers of our own minds. While we can't control what happens around us, we can control our thoughts. Victory in everything first takes place in the mind.

The military uses a pool to conduct drown-proofing classes for special force divers. One such diver named Max related how swimming underwater laps many soldiers would give up before reaching the end of the pool coming up for air before completing the required underwater swim time. Max was successful in his training and became one of the select few men to be a U.S. Army diver. Max wasn't necessarily a stronger or faster swimmer than the others his secret was the big wave surfing mind set. He took the challenge, kept his mind on what he wanted and told himself "Hang in there one second at a time." For proven success in all endeavors be like a big wave surfer, embrace challenge, keep your mind on the results you want and most important never give up. See you in the surf.
